What is the Right Method of Dog Training?
A lot of humans don't realize the importance of training their dog. Often, because we don't understand our dogs, and our dogs don't understand us, our canine buddies can develop behavioral issues. Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons so many dogs are dropped off at shelters.
We need to understand that a small investment in learning how to communicate with our dog will bring both the dog and it's human a lifetime of companionship, love and happiness.
One of Janice's missions is to help decrease the number of dogs dropped off at shelters by educating people on the responsibility we all have to train our loved dogs using positive and loving methods.
In recent years, dog training has changed dramatically. And it's changed for the good. More and more trainers are moving over to the "positive" side and are using positive motivation as their primary tool for behavior modification.
Another mission for Janice is to eliminate the use of choke chains, prong collars and other hurtful devices that have been used on dogs.
Janice wants to spread the message that the result of positive training methods will be a dog that listens with the utmost of willingness and enjoyment and not because he's obeying out of the fear of being negatively corrected.
Obedience training establishes a communication system between you and your dog, teaches your dog to understand and follow commands, and establishes the family members as dominant figures (leaders) in the social hierarchy of the family. In the absence of obedience training, a dog that jumps, chews, barks and is generally dominant is simply being a dog, doing the things he would do to survive in the wild. Can you blame him if he was never properly taught what we expect of him? Obedience training teaches your dog manners and teaches you and your dog how to communicate with each other and live in harmony with each other.
In some cases, there are inappropriate and sometimes "abnormal behaviors" that, if left untreated, may result in the dog being removed from the family because of his behavior. This often means the dog is brought to an animal control shelter where, in most cases, your pet will be killed (euthanasia) because there is no room in our shelters.
With all the opportunities out there to help you and your best friend be the best of pals, killing your dog is not a final solution. Get help from a dog trainer that uses positive methods!
All dogs go through a period of doggie adolescence. This can be a difficult and challenging time for the human/canine team. Depending on the breed of the dog, these challenges can last until the dog is two to three years old.
Remember: The adult dog is a direct result of the amount of time and effort the human puts into training during the first 4 months to 2 years of age.
The wonderful secret to the whole process is............
Dog training is fun!
